Father & son team David and Robert Viner have won their class at this years Winton 300 on Debut in their late model NC MX5! The pairing had originally intended on ‘sampling’ a few events before preparing for a serious assault on the 2014 Wakefield & Winton 300 events.
The grid of 49 starters rolled to the start line mid afternoon with David Viner in 38th position. David managed to move-up a number of positions in the opening laps which proved to be hectic with such a large grid. There was no respite as another Mazda MX5 traded places with David for the greater part of his stint. Any advantage David had managed to gain would then be nullified by a number of safety car periods. David them moved into P1 for class D4 before the end of his stint.
A smooth pit stop saw Rober Viner rejoin the field whilst maintaing their class position. He then went on to set some of the fastest times of the class. Robert was able to hold the class position whilst deftly managing both the lapped and lapping traffic. There were a number of “close calls” on-track but Robert managed to cross the line 16th outright and first in class after more than 3 hours of intense racing.
A great effort by them both and the Targa Racing team would like to congratulate David & Robert on a magnificent debut and class win. We’re looking forward to season 2014 with the Viner’s!
